Premier Aircraft Design - The Beechcraft Premier I Hawker is a light business jet aircraft produced by the Beechcraft division of Beechcraft. The aircraft was designed to compete with the Cessna CitationJet series of aircraft.

I began designing the Premier in early 1994 under the designation PD-374 (PD for Preliminary Design), and development was authorized to proceed early the following year. The aircraft was officially launched at the National Business Aviation Association Annual Conference in September 1995, and construction of the first prototype began in late 1996.

The Premier I prototype was launched on 19 August 1998, with the first flight on 22 December 1998; Four prototypes were used in the flight test program.

After development delays, the aircraft became operational in 2001, however, with poor runway performance, irregular lift dump and brakes, a noisy cabin and a cramped cockpit. It was upgraded in 2006 as the Premier IA for $7 million with better brakes, avionics and cabin, and 163 were built over five years.

Developed from the Premier IA, the new aircraft will have a 20% longer range with a higher cruise speed, four passengers and a larger payload. The aircraft will continue to use composite materials for its fuselage and will have stronger wings and new wings for improved performance over the previous model. The first flight was scheduled for April 2009, and FAA certification was scheduled for the first half of 2010.

On August 31, 2009, the company announced that it was slowing development of the Premier II, with its first delivery date in late 2012 or early 2013 due to the poor business jet market. The company's president and CEO, Bill Boistor, said: "While we are fully committed to the certification and deployment of the designed class-leading Premier II, we must be cautious in assessing the current and projected global economic conditions. Based on these conditions, we are well positioned with the expected recovery of the business jet market." We have decided to extend the trial period to align."

In October 2010, Hawker Beechcraft announced that the Premier II had been rebranded and upgraded as the Hawker 200.

In December 2011, the company announced that it was delaying development of the Hawker 200 aircraft due to the uncertain state of the economy. CEO Bill Boistor indicated the program was not canceled, saying the aircraft program "was in a good position to continue ... the timing is right."

The Premier I is constructed with a high strength composite, carbon fiber/epoxy honeycomb structure fuselage. The Premier I and IA can be certified as light aircraft for single pilot operation. Powerplants are Williams International FJ44-2A Vine.

Its cabin is as wide as the Citation Excel's, with about 3 inches (76 mm) less headroom, and the seats are 11.2 feet (3.4 m) long, like the CJ2, with four seats in the cockpit and two in the back. Chairs and enclosed, rear toilet 2.3 feet (0.70 m) long. BOWs are typically around 8,400 lb (3,800 kg), leaving 570 lb (260 kg) for payload with full tanks. The Premier 1A has a fuel burn and average weight of 817 lb (371 kg)/h at Mach 0.8 MA, 451 kn (835 km/h) and 424 kn (785 km/h) at FL310. It can fly 1,105 or 1,365 nmi (2,046 or 2,528 km) with four passengers and can fly at an altitude of 3,792 ft (1,156 m) at ISA temperatures and sea level.

Line maintenance is performed at 200-hour intervals, with A checks at 600 hours and B checks at 1,200 hours, plus caldera checks, at about $300/hour (2019). Wine service for two at $300 per hour (2019) with 2500 hours of hot section inspection and 5000 hours of TBOs. Used competition includes the CJ2 and the Nextant 400XT, both of which have tighter cabins but better airport performance, the CJ2 carrying four passengers over 1,500 nm (2,800 km) but 30–40 kn (56–74 km/h) slower and about $1 million more expensive, while the 400XT can fly 1,800 nm (3,300 km) at the same cost, but are generally high-time jets. Earth dropped at about 4,300 feet per minute as we left Tampa International Airport, quickly leveling off at flight level 370 and accelerating to 440 knots true airspeed on this ISA + 10 day.

My suspicions were correct. Raytheon/Beechcraft/Hawker Premier IA is like some promising high school student abandoned by his dysfunctional family; A grown child who is fading, wants to do great things, but is thwarted by circumstances beyond his control.

The Premier is the only jet aircraft with the Beechcraft name designed in-house (the Beechjet was designed and originally built by Mitsubishi). As such, the Prime Minister never seemed to fit into a family dominated by screwballs.

Meanwhile, parent company Raytheon has set its sights on larger aircraft since the first blueprints for the composite premiered. Raytheon scratched that large-jet itch by acquiring British Aerospace's Hawker product line, giving it immediate access to the mid- and ultra-midsize jet line, again leaving the new Premier searching for its place in the now-larger family.

Despite the identity crisis, the Prime I finally appeared in 1998 and was certified in 2001, the fastest and most widespread in the light jet category. But, to continue that middle school analogy, it was awkward and embarrassing. Its innovative twisted carbon fiber fuselage was light and thin-walled, making for an exceptionally spacious cabin, but cramped inside; Outside, its composite fibers showed through the paint. The brake was on. The brand new automatic lift dump didn't work as planned, causing hair-pulling at times as it wouldn't activate.
